Answers to Our Customers' Most Frequently Asked Questions
What does Reel Edits do?
Reel Edits takes home video or corporate video source footage in any format, and converts it to DVD. Reel Edits also edits down the material into entertaining or helpful movies.
What kinds of video formats does Reel Edits accept?
Reel Edits accepts any format you can think of. From 8mm to 16mm to MiniDV and HDV, Reel Edits can handle it all.
How will Reel Edits know what footage to include in the edited movie?
You can make your instructions to Reel Edits as specific as you like. We can literally work off of a detailed set of instructions, complete with description of who the important people in the video are and when they enter and exit, or we can work with little more than a “please make it look funny”. You can call the shots, or leave it up to us.
Can you create Blu-Ray discs?
Yes! Blu-Ray has become the industry standard for burning HD material to disc, and Reel Edits is on the cutting edge of this technology. Please be aware that some older Blu-Ray players may have trouble playing Blu-Ray discs produced at Reel Edits, as we must necessarily purchase BD-Rs (Blu-Ray-R discs) for producing your material, and some older players won't play BD-Rs. Also, while Blu-Ray is currently the best way to burn HD to disc, it is not perfect. You may notice that there is a slight decrease in quality from your original material -- but you will also notice that it is significantly higher-quality than a DVD of the same material.
Can you put my edited video onto Mini-DV tapes?
Yes! We strongly encourage our clients to take advantage of this option, particularly for HD content, as this is currently the best way to retain the original picture and sound quality of your materials (yes, better than DVD and Blu-Ray). It is also a terrific way to back-up the final edit, in case you ever want us to produce additional DVDs or Blu-Rays of the material.
Can you add music to my video?
Yes! We offer the option of adding an original soundtrack for an additional price. Please contact us regarding using popular music or other copyrighted works.
What if I don’t need an edited movie and just want a DVD made from my source footage?
That’s okay. We don’t have to edit the footage down into a movie. We can just take your original footage and put it on DVD exactly as it is.
What will I receive?
2-3 weeks after receiving your materials, you will receive a link to where you can download the first draft of your movie(s), provided they are under 20 minutes long. After approval, we will mail your DVDs and/or Blu-Ray discs, along with your original material.
Why do you charge by the number of hours of source footage submitted?
Video editing takes a great deal of time. Our editors must watch every moment of the original footage and then pore over it tirelessly to create quality movies. We could bill by the number of hours it takes for the editor to complete the project, but we believe it is fairer to you, the customer, for you to have an accurate understanding of the cost before you commit to the purchase. As for conversions, they must be done in real time and therefore take a similar amount of time and energy to the editing process.
How do I submit my materials to Reel Edits?
We recommend that you carefully package your materials and ship them to Reel Edits using FedEx or UPS. If you provide us with an account number, we will use the same method to return the materials to you when we're finished. Otherwise, we typically use the U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail option.
What is the absolute safest way to ship my materials to Reel Edits?
Given that some clients ship us their only copy of their original materials (we always recommend making a copy first, but we understand that this is not always convenient or possible), we can supply a safe box. For an additional $50, Reel Edits will send you the Reel Safe, which is a very durable case built by Pelican. It is air tight, water-proof, dust-proof, and crush-proof. Simply place your materials inside (whether they be cassette tapes, hard drives, DVDs, etc), and mail it back to us using the delivery method of your choice (again, we recommend FedEx or UPS). To date, Reel Edits has never had any materials lost, stolen, deleted, or tampered with, with or without the Reel Safe.
How long does it take for Reel Edits to convert and/or edit my materials?
Once your order is secure, the process typically takes around 2-3 weeks.
How will my DVDs and original materials be mailed back to me?
Unless you instruct us otherwise, Reel Edits will return your materials using the U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail option. We will retain your materials on our computers until you have confirmed that they have arrived to you in good condition.
Do you offer a satisfaction guarantee?
Yes. Reel Edits aims to satisfy every single customer. If you are unsatisfied with our work, we will issue a full refund for the service you were unsatisfied with.
